Two sets of refrigeration under one roof
A matched pair can mean two separate columns, one refrigerator and one freezer, or a single built-in combination cabinet with the two compartments stacked or side by side. Either way the cooling is doubled: the columns are separate appliances, and Sub-Zero’s built-in combinations run two compressors under independent control. So when an owner tells us one half is warm and the other is fine, we believe both halves of that sentence. The healthy half is no evidence against the failing one, and the failing one gets diagnosed on its own terms.
Which half, which parts
The freezer half has the longer list. On the classic built-ins it carries a defrost heater, a terminator that stops each defrost, and a heated drain trough, and a failure in any of them lets frost build on its coil until the fan cannot move air through it. After that comes the freezer fan itself.
The refrigerator half is mostly a question of air and seals. Its fan may have stopped, or on the 600-series built-ins the door switch that runs it may no longer be pressed when the door shuts. A door held open slightly by a shelf item or a worn hinge, or a gasket that no longer seals, lets warm air in until that half cannot keep up. The sealed system of either half, pictured here with gauges at the service valve, is where the search finishes rather than where it starts.
