Refrigerator (fresh-food side)

Sub-Zero Display Says 38 but the Thermometer Disagrees

In the owner's words

The panel has said 38 for years, but the thermometer I hung on the door shelf reads 44 some evenings and 36 other mornings. Which one do I believe?

Short answerThe number on a Sub-Zero panel is the set point, the temperature you asked for, not a reading of the shelves. A thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf, left 12 hours, is the fair comparison. Small drifts either side are normal; a steady gap of ten degrees or more is a sensor question for Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211.

Two numbers measuring different things

Sub-Zero’s own guidance is blunt: air temperature is not an accurate measure of how a refrigerator is cooling, food temperature is. A dial thermometer clipped to a door bin mostly reports the room each time you open up. Water in a glass behaves like milk or leftovers and changes slowly, which is why it makes the fair comparison.

When the gap is real

The built-in 600-series service manual treats food ten degrees or more colder than the display as a compartment thermistor misreading, and a panel reading between 1 and 7 as Celsius mistaken for Fahrenheit. The second takes a moment on the panel to put right; the first is a part.

What you can check safely

  • Sink the thermometer bulb in a glass of water, set the glass at the center of the compartment, midway front to back and top to bottom, and keep the door shut for 12 hours.
  • Check whether the display reads a single digit, which on these panels means it has been switched to Celsius rather than Fahrenheit.
  • Take a second reading at a different time of day before deciding the two numbers really disagree.

Owner checks end there. Sealed tubing, wiring behind the grille and anything held by screws belongs on a service call — Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211.

Questions owners ask about this

Why doesn't the Sub-Zero display show the real temperature?

Sub-Zero states that the panel shows the set point. The control holds the cabinet around that figure, and the only honest way to see how well it succeeds is to measure food, or water standing in for food. Air readings swing every time the door opens and mislead more than they help.

How far from 38 is still normal for a Sub-Zero refrigerator?

Sub-Zero calls a drift of about five degrees either way normal, depending on door openings, humidity and room temperature. Readings that stay well outside that, or a water glass ten or more degrees off the set point, deserve a visit from Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211.

Should I just turn the setting down to match the thermometer?

Not until you have a water-glass reading you trust. Chasing a door-shelf thermometer is how refrigerators end up freezing lettuce. If a careful reading still disagrees with the set point, changing the setting only hides a sensor that will keep drifting, so it is better diagnosed than compensated.
