Wine cooler

Sub-Zero Wine Cooler Humming Loudly at Night

In the owner's words

Once the house goes quiet, the wine cabinet hums loud enough to hear from the next room. It never used to, and it seems to go on for longer each night.

Short answerA Sub-Zero wine cabinet that has started humming loudly at night is usually telling you about a fan. What we usually find is a motor with worn bearings, often caked in dust, or a cabinet that has shifted until it touches the joinery around it. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211, listens for where the sound starts before replacing anything.

Following the sound

Sub-Zero’s own noise troubleshooting separates fan noise from everything else first, then looks for a blocked fan, packaging pressed against one, and a condenser that has not been cleaned. That order is worth keeping, because the cheapest causes are also the most common ones and they can be seen from the front of the cabinet.

What we usually find

Most often it is a fan motor whose bearings have worn, and more often than not it has worn them under a coat of dust. It keeps turning, so the cabinet still holds its set point and nothing looks wrong from the kitchen; what changes is the note, from a hum you could sleep through to a drone you cannot.

Contact comes next. A cabinet that has shifted, or a trim strip that now touches the joinery, turns an ordinary hum into a buzz, and a hand pressed on the side usually proves it in seconds.

A loud compressor is the least common of the three and the dearest, so it is confirmed rather than assumed: how long the cabinet runs, what the condenser looks like with the grille off, and what each zone reads after a full cycle to settle.

What you can check safely

  • Open the door while the sound is going. On units whose inside fans stop with the door open, a hum that stops too points at one of those fans.
  • Look at the grille at the base for lint; Sub-Zero asks for the condenser on a wine unit to be cleaned if it has not been done in three months.

Owner checks end there. Sealed tubing, wiring behind the grille and anything held by screws belongs on a service call — Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211.

Questions owners ask about this

Which sounds from a Sub-Zero wine cabinet are normal?

Sub-Zero's noise guide covers humming, vibrating, crackling and knocking from its refrigeration and wine units, and much of it comes from fans, the compressor and the cabinet settling as it cycles. A sound that is new, much louder than before or growing each week is the one worth having checked.

Why is it louder at night?

Usually it is not louder, the house is quieter. That said, a worn fan motor does grow noisier over weeks, and a clogged condenser makes the cabinet run longer, so the hum lasts more of the night. A change in length is as useful to mention as a change in volume.

Is a humming fan urgent?

Not an emergency, but a fan that fails outright leaves the cabinet unable to hold temperature. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211, finds which motor is noisy on an $89 service call, and the fan band in the ledger above covers replacing it.
