The coil at the bottom of the cabinet
A built-in Sub-Zero breathes through the grille at its base. Room air is pulled across the condenser coil, carries the heat away, and leaves again through the same opening. Sub-Zero asks owners to clean that coil every six to twelve months, sooner with a dog or cat in the house, and it advises against chemical coil cleaners. When the coil is matted over, the whole cabinet runs warm and long, which on a sunny afternoon can look like a much bigger failure than it is.

When only the refrigerator warms
If the freezer is fine and the fresh-food side is not, the fault sits on the refrigerator’s own side: on the classic built-in combination units each side has its own refrigeration. We start with the fan inside the compartment, then the temperature sensor, then frost left by a door that stayed open. Sub-Zero recommends a setting of 38°F; a cabinet set there that still reads above 48°F after the coil is clean is unlikely to recover on its own.
